This Tabriz rug is a delightful masterpiece, woven with a palette of soft pastel tones that evoke grace and elegance. The ivory field serves as a gentle and inviting backdrop, allowing the intricate details to stand out beautifully. At the heart of the design is a refined medallion, framed by two mythical gargoyles, their poised forms adding an unexpected touch of mystique. Delicate depictions of animals and birds are scattered throughout the field, with graceful birds in mid-flight and gentle animals nestled among floral sprays. These lively motifs bring a sense of movement and life to the rug, blending realism with an almost storybook charm—a hallmark of the Tabriz style.
Surrounding the central scene is a light pink border, its soft hue creating a subtle frame that complements the ivory field. The border is intricately decorated with floral motifs, arabesques, and fine vine work, echoing the elegance of the central medallion while adding a gentle splash of color to the overall composition. Throughout the rug, muted shades of sky blue, pale green, and soft gold weave into the design, highlighting the details without overpowering the pastel palette. Weaving City: Kerman
Weaving time: 1.5 year
Material: baby wool and cotton
Age: 124 years old, circa 1890/1900
Description:
In the 19th and 20th centuries, it became fashionable in Iran to create Kerman carpets featuring designs inspired by European sources. This particular carpet draws its design from a Louis XIV Gobelins tapestry from the Les Sujets de la Fable series, based on Raphael's 16th-century drawings. Woven on three separate occasions for Louis XIV between 1685 and 1704, the tapestry depicts "La Danse d'une Nymphe de la Droite," featuring Pomona with Vertumnus in the guise of a faun, playing the pipes of the fertility god Pan. The scene includes a vase supported by a pedestal, with playful putti overhead, set against a lush, Arcadian landscape.
A copy of this tapestry once adorned the public room of the Golestan Palace in Tehran.
